Yamaha EFI Mappings Writeup

Just wanted to kick off a thread regarding Big Blue's fuel mapping capabilities. We've all heard how great fuel injection is. You don't have to rejet anymore. When you travel to Colorado or indoors it just works without any adjustments, but I've never really understood it much. You buy an aftermarket product and slap it on and you have a couple different buttons. Cool. I've owned 3 fuel injection bikes and it's always been good enough not to mess with.

So I test rode a new 2012 Yami and it just ripped. I went out and bought an '11 for myself but when I got it on the track it felt very very wimpy. Definitely not a 450 I was used to. Wtf? The dude pitted next to me had this little blue hand held device (the GYTR Power Tuner) and offered to help. We hooked it up and about 5 minutes later we figured out the previous owner had changed the default factory settings. First thing we did was set it all back to zeros. It took about 2 minutes and the bike was completely different (better). It went from a 420 to about a 440. From that point on I was sold on fuel injection and Yamaha's. Since then I've tweaked it so it feels like the ripping Kawi I was used to. It still had a bark at low rpm and had a problem idling through the pits so I've toned down the low rpm quite a bit and now it's just perfect.

The point is you have so much control now with these bikes so don't be afraid to make changes to make your Yami the perfect bike for you.

The default settings are pretty decent all around. If you ever screw things up you can always go back to default:

Fuel
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0

Ignitiion
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0

Here are a couple good ones to start with from MXA. I've tried them all and they are noticeably different.

The SMOOTH would be useful for enduros or other types of riding. I went with SNAPPY for motocross and added the LESS HIT part to get rid of the bark. The tuner can store 9 settings for you so find some good ones that work for you.

I loved that functionality about mine, I still have my tuner too. 2 minutes to change a tune .... you must be taking your time! It takes about 30 sec from the time to plug it in til you are unplugging !

I cant believe the other manufacturers havent jumped on that band wagon yet

So let me get this straight......you sold the Kaw to get the Yam then changed your Yam to run like a Kaw.
What next......a Honda?

Have you seen anything similar for the Hondas? I have a Sisneros map on mine but would love to be able to change it on the fly.

The Kawi ran but didn't turn. The Honda turned but didn't run. All I wanted was a Kawonda!

Bill, unfortunately the other manufacturers have dropped the ball big time. All you get is a couple aftermarket switches:)

You can buy the Honda box for $399.. but there's no handy dandy writeups I can find. Need a laptop and battery too. Or get a PowerCommander

I thought the $399 one was just a handful of preset mappings. No diagnostic. I remember seeing the manual reference some other tool for $1300 to troubleshoot the sensors. I could be wrong.

Also Yamaha has built a hour meter into the EFI.
Just plug in the tuner and you'll know exactly how many hours the engine has been running.

Wow that's Awesome. I bought the Tuner before Briarcliff this year, didn't have a chance to use it because the old man broke his leg. But it's still in the packaging. Can't wait to try these settings out!!

Hour meter for sale anyone need a nice GYTR hour meter?

I'm curious Chuck, did the Smooth , and hard pack, and MXA rider preferred tunes keep the front end more planted to the ground? I don't like the light feeling, what I've been reading if you reduce the initial hit, the front end stay more firmly to the ground and a lot of riders have more confidence going into corners and not getting that yamaha 'push.'

Yes, SMOOTH keeps the front end on the ground everywhere. To me it's sluggish. I wanted the exact opposite. I want the front end off the ground upon exiting and all the way down the road. Hanging on for 4-5 laps is my physical challenge that I'm going to solve this winter.

Georgie- I used an hour meter on my '10 for knowing when to change engine oil. Much easier than plugging in the GYTR tuner, which can be tough at times.
Can't wait until someone (like Dr. D) makes a bracket for the '14 as their really isn't any where to tape one.

Also I used the 3rd map (everything was +4's) for 3 years before changing it. Just never felt I needed the power surge and wanted to build endurance.
Even the on the new bike, the timing is a bit advanced and fuel richer and it's smoother than stock (from MXA).

I can deal with sluggish if the front end sticks. I can't stand the front end push. Makes me less aggressive through corners.

My 04/05 Honda 250/450f's stuck to the corners like glue. Never pushed. I hate front end push. You can set these bikes up because plessinger clearly had zero problems this year at Loretta's on his 13 450. No complaints of front end push!
