Zerk fittings?
      #197596 - 07/23/10 06:59 PM

Hey yo,

I did this to my Tecate 3-wheeler long ago, but never have on my MX bike. Prolly wouldn't on my "race" bike, however I don't seem to have one of those any more....

What are the pros and cons in putting zerk fittings on the bike at all areas that need grease (hubs, steering neck, etc.)? Swingarm bearing would be difficult, but could be done with plugs and such. Not sure I will, but was thinking of doing it more so on my hubs, steering neck, linkage, and such if I could get a good clearence spot.

Thoughts?

Truth of the matter is, this is just a thought at the momento. Heck, I have hard enough time keeping it maintenanced, let along "modifying" it.

This bike came with factory zerk fittings. The broken part was plenty greasy too.

That's too funny, but I've seen it before.

I wouldn't trust zerk fittings. You got to tear down to get the dirt out, and generally the power washer probably does more damage than anything else on bearings that need greasing.

I usually spray my linkage bearing seals and any other seals with wd-40 before I ride to keep them soft and pliable which will help them keep the dirt out better. Hardened seals will damage bike parts as well by wearing grooves in the soft aluminum.

I see what your saying and makes sense, but if you keep it full of grease, well, water shouldn't be an issue. I can see the dirt issue. Always looking for a shortcut, but they might not always be the best path for longevity...

Thanks!!

I like the zerk idea and have used it on bikes in the past . Might have to try it again . There used to be little rubber cap/tether thingies you could get to keep crud out of zerk fittings but I don't recall seeing them around lately .
