A fine weekend it was! A bit of rain before the weekend made for some nice conditions and the heat was downright bearable compared to last year. A big plus was having a starting gate that was on loan from Drew Wolfe! Though the track layout was similar to last year it seemed tighter in a number of areas...don't get me wrong I had a great time on the track, just seemed a bit tight at times.

I had two holeshots in the 50+ int class but managed to work my way back to a fourth overall for the day. Definitely more competition in my class this year (or, prolly just me getting older and slower). Here's two pics my wife got of my class coming into to the first corner. If numbers 415, 60, and 493 get on this site by any chance...nice ride as you guys were runnin good!

The 1st moto of the non-current B/C class was a good one. Beenridin's son Jack was on a not-so-current RM250 and did a fine job against eventual moto and overall winner Ben Rogers.

Sorry, pic's a bit on the blurry side.

MOOCH! We were just talking and wondering where you were today! I swear we never saw you and were curious as to why you didn't make it. Funny.

I raced 3 classes so I didn't spend much time watching.

There were some big classes this year! Really nice to see people showing up! I have some pics and video to post later.....

You were on a 125 in non-current...right? Gotta be rough getting a decent start on the tiddler when everyone else in that class seemed to be on at least a 250.

Although the 125 probably felt pretty good on all those tight turns!

Hopefully, the Armory girls and the starting gate will return next year!!

I was cautious not to be peeping at the start babes for fear of gettin a finger poke in the eye from the wife.

I watched the vintage boys and girls race a good bit Saturday. I noticed that it was as though they had 3 options in the corners. Stay inside and hit the line, hit the middle and power slide around, or stick the outside and rail the small berm. And we saw a lot of passing by railing the outside. I thought this was very cool. Then during our races yesterday there was good flow around most all of the corners.

Track conditions seemed perfect in the morning and held up pretty well throughout the day. Very cool having a starting gate as well.

Good job to the Log Road Crew and The Wolfe family for their support of the event.

Here is some Gopro of the first Non-Current moto. This class was stacked and had 20 entries. I had a super fun time racing this class, I think I got 7th overall.
On the start, you will see DMX153 tangle with another rider and the hay bales and go down hard in the first turn! TB901 then cuts inside the bales (and got scolded by officials) and I follow him through.

A few corners in, a kid on a KTM Enduro stuffs me. Keep your eye on him as nearing the end of the first lap he tries to stuff Mosher and high sides!

Oh, yeah, big fun. Met lots of people and made some new friends, just a great time. We got there early Thursday and it rained heavy all the way there. As soon as we pulled into the track it quit and never rained again, although it really wanted to all day Friday. Really nice weather after that. The track was real well prepped, I thought.

If you camped in the campground you saw us, we were right inside the gate at the top of the hill. What a great show. Our camp looked like this:
5971

My youngest son, Ben, on our MX360:
5970

He ran a good, tight race with the guy who won his class, but he said the trans had too many neutrals in it and got beat. Whatever.

These are the only two pics I have downloaded, I'll post some more later.

I had a great time out there. It's always fun to get around the Vintage community and hang out. I liked the track, but also thought some of it was a little tight. If I were to suggest anything for the races, it would be to get a list of eligible bikes and years for every class. At Tech they need to be able to identify all the bikes for the classes. I saw quite a few bikes race in classes that they were not eligible to be in. In Tech they asked what class you were in, but they didn't (IMHO) confirm that the bike was even eligible. Yes, you could probably protest it, but who wants to be "that guy."

Pit, how much you want to edit out the first 12 seconds of that vid? We were big time screwed until we found that detour. God, why didn't someone tell me to take off those dorky glasses on the podium? Ben on the podium said he paid $1200 for that bike. I thought, hell I only paid $950. But a quick review of my Ebay, Dennis Kirk, and Motosport purchases revealed an additional $1494...and it still looks like a POS. It was worth it I guess, had fun, cut a little track, finished better than I deserved. Better lucky than good. Hope to see you guys at Vet Fest.

Heart-break of Sunday for our crew goes to Jack Babet. Jack was FLYING on the '82 RM250 and smoked out to the holeshot in the first moto of Non-Current B/C and led 2 or 3 laps before ending up 3rd in the moto. Then he went right back to the gate and smoked everyone in the EVO3 250 class and led wire to wire.

Second moto of Non-Current he was in a first turn tangle and ended up with a broken bike that could not be fixed in time for his other moto. So his day was 3-DNF and 1-DNS. SUCKED as he was riding awesome and looked awesome on that bike, great form and great riding!

Yep, and we need to remember that he moved to a big bike at barely 14 years old. He's now 16 and RIPPING on a 250! He is definitely one of those kids that was "ok" on a mini, and is now really developing on a big bike.

Vmd was awesome this weekend and the best part was watching my son develop into a true sportsman and young adult. After a 2nd in his non - current intermediate moto to Ben Rodgers ( 3rd including the expert rider ) and a wire to wire runaway in the 250 intermediate moto 1 race he suffered a crash that ended his day.
Jack sat on the line after the non- current moto crash with my bike as I talked with the AMAofficial. I was told to pull him off the gate and he could not run with a different bike . This ended his day racing and the hopes of a first place finish .
As he rode my bike back to the pits and I pushed his back I wondered what I would come back too . To my surprise he was calm and in control. I gave him a big hug and told him how proud I was of him. Not because he was so fast but for just how he handled himself in the moment. I told him that this was a defining moment to be an example to others and to be a true sportsman. I think he got it . I decided to pack it in for my last moto and spend the last part of the day being a dad to my son.
As we were breaking down camp another younger rider (14 or so)came back to the pits complaining that he had been pushed off the track and lost a position. He was swearing and throwing things , we watched and jack was able to see the difference between this kids tantrum and how he had reacted . It was another moment to build on before a boy becomes a man . I am so proud of my son .
Look out next year as jack will certainly be a true competitor.

Glad to see everyone had a good time & Jack is coming of age very well.

Young Jack has developed very good riding form plus will say I was quite impressed with Jack & crew as they were doing landscaping work at my home on July 3rd
in 90+ heat and when that clouds burst all those you men kept working never complaining once so Mike you will have no worries on him making his own way in life as
99.9% of 16 year old guys would have quit on the spot.

Mike was your buddy these as though a battle to the flag was brewing for you guys?

Track looked pretty sweet as the Log Road crew always does such a good job!

Hope to be these next year as I need to sniff some pre-mix soon....thinking....maybe I should go drop some in the mower gas tank as my wife is getting
ready to cut the grass...yeah need to get her a Lawnboy 2 smoker!

Thanks again KRH you made a great weekend even better. Although I didn't fare as well on my RM250 I still had a great

Wow, I was not aware this had taken place.
It's unfortunate to end this way with such a solid start. Having it so close and then taken away may have a more powerful impact than if he had handily walked away with wins. It may certainly shore up his competitive determination even more with such a stinging defeat.

Having only talked with you guys a few times, it's easy to see strength of the family behind it all and you should be very proud. He will become a formidable racer respected by many.

No problem, Dave, it was great meeting you and Rick. I'm happy it got raced and finished on the podium. I thought it was a pretty competitive bike, but I'm biased. You proved to me that we're at least headed in the right direction with it. I'm pretty sure there's more power left in the motor. We're about as far as we can go with the suspension. If it's open next year you're welcome to it. You'll have to try the MX360. You'll really appreciate your RM after getting beat on by that beast.:D

The last new bike I bought was an RM 250 in 2001. I have been real lucky buying clean used bikes for the most part. Oh and a leftover 2006 CR 85 for Jack.

I have been real lucky buying clean used bikes for the most part.
Luck don't last long on a 12,000 RPM race machine......

Ok, but they’ve all been 2-strokes and this is not a 2-stroke.
1) 250-F’s have seen remarkable progression over the last few years in both performance and reliability. Last year’s model (2012) is the oldest I would even consider.
2) This will be Jack’s new love and he will ride the PISS out of it….(believe me). He will be putting countless hours on it as he hones his skill and competitiveness.
3) 4-strokes are time-bombs….meaning it will run just fine until it blows, unlike a 2-stroke that slowly gets clapped-out. You see- Jack will never come back to the pits saying something sounds funny or feels wrong. It will run 100% strong up to the bitter end, then just blow. It’s going to beYOU (or Pit) that has to keep an eye on the hour meter and do necessary maintenance if you want to keep it alive more than 6 months with a young kid like Jack hammering it.
4) I feel a 4-stroke needs proper break-in when new. And on a used bike you don’t get to do that.
5) I feel a 4 stroke needs proper maintenance, and with a used bike you’ll never know.
6) ….I could go on forever….
But …… if say Mosher were to want to part with his RMZ -250…..I would maybe consider it.

Wow, the awesome pics taken by the AMA photographer are quite the value add! Great pics that made everyone look like they were faster than a bunch of old guys!

Yes, I think it was a year or maybe 2 years ago when I whined that there was never a single picture of me in the AMA pic gallery for the event...well, this year makes up for it and I'll stop whining!

The original size option for the pics are fantastic and for my moto there's a 3 pic sequence of everyone going for the 1st corner which did a great job of catching one of my holeshots! There was also 3 more pics of me from that same moto and they were all unreal quality! My wife who took the pics I posted at the beginning of this thread had said how the AMA pics almost look 3D they're so good and how they made her auto focus shots look pretty shabby! Of course, I assured her she did a fine job with the inexpensive camera we have.

Here's one of the AMA photographer pics where one of the faster guys in my class was haggling with me in that little flat corner chicane area at the finish...I kinda sucked in that area as it was hard for me to judge what kind of traction there was in those flat corners. He eventually pulled off a clean pass in that little narrow corner right after the finish line...props to 60G!

Thanks again to the AMA for the ultra fine pics!

Stole this one from a friend's face book album...thanks Jess.

This guy was haulin on that RM125! Even got a bit of vintage crossed up scrub action going with it. Not sure but his name might be Brett Gattrell?

haha...good for them being able to pick up a bike and take it out and immediately have some good results on it. Kinda like Mosher and Beenridin trading RM 250s and then Ben Rodgers proceeds to do well on the bike Mosher got on the trade...Ben had never ridden a drum brake bike much less ridden that particular drum brake bike!

I keep an eye peeled for a bike to pick up at vintage days but it's always a case of a bike being too nice/expensive or too haggard looking. Amazingly, a bike that REALLY caught my eye was a 1974ish CanAm 175 TNT enduro. Bike looked like new and was just cool looking! Stuff on it seemed really heavy duty looking, for example, the chain looked massive like maybe it was a 530? I asked the guy if he was selling it...nope. So now I have to look for a Maico and a CanAm.

Wow, the awesome pics taken by the AMA photographer are quite the value add! Great pics that made everyone look like they were faster than a bunch of old guys!

Thanks, guys. Corey did a great job.

As for the photos, we try to do that for all the Grand Championship level events, which include the AMA Vintage Grand Championships.

Luck don't last long on a 12,000 RPM race machine......

But …… if say Mosher were to want to part with his RMZ -250…..I would maybe consider it.

At first I was offended...but then reality slapped me in the back of the head...

A fine weekend it was!
I had two holeshots in the 50+ int class but managed to work my way back to a fourth overall for the day. Definitely more competition in my class this year (or, prolly just me getting older and slower). If numbers 415, 60, and 493 get on this site by any chance...nice ride as you guys were runnin good!

Looking back at the results Mooch, with 16 in your class, 4th was pretty good. At the awards ceremony, I met a local racer (Newark) Mike Wheeler, he done real well at Athens and Vintage Days, and is going to give you guys fits in 50+ in a year or two.
