How to: Get that crisp like-new feeling throttle

I swear all my bikes get "hard throttle." It's like no matter what I do.....it's never like new.

I took the throttle housing apart, cleaned it all. Cleaned the inside of the throttle tube, and the handlebar.... Put it all back together, still hard and doesn't have that light like-new flick.

I've always had this problem with all my bikes, and my buddy Tom says he never has this problem. So what the hell am I doing wrong? Not washing the bike correctly? Not cleaning the throttle cable good enough? Makes me just want to buy all new OEM throttle housing, throttle tube and throttle cable....


3 things I can't stand on a race bike.... Tank slapping suspension, a rear brake pedal that goes to the dirt and a harder-than-normal throttle to twist. And mine isn't even THAT bad, but I must have it perfect. It snaps back fine, doesn't feel gritty but its just harder to twist. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
 
Sounds to me you may have a problem with how your cable is routed. If it is binding or hard angle you will get a stiff feeling.
 
I'll look into that, but i'm pretty sure it's been routed the same since it was rolled out of the factory. 2008 Yz 250.
 
Check the cable adjustment. If you have too much or not enough tension, it can bind up. Happened to me and it was driving me crazy until I figured out that was the issue.
 
Lube the throttle tube with 10W40, fork oil or premix oil. DO NOT use WD40, as this will evaporate and get sticky. DO NOT use grease or chain lube either. Too sticky.

Lube the cable off the carb. Trust me, you don't want gummed up stuff from inside the cable housing getting lodged between the carb body and the throttle slide.

Move the throttle tube / housing a few mm outboard. The end of the tube might be rubbing on the end of the handlebar, or you might have some residual grip glue causing interference.

Bought something similar to that off eBay.. filled the cables with silicone lubricant

Brought it back to life!
 
I use a product called REM-oil made by the Remington Co. for gun lubrication . It has teflon in it and comes in a spray or small drip bottle . Take the cable off the bike as mentioned and keep working drops of the oil into the cable sheath until it comes out the bottom clear . If a cable feels gritty I will use some contact cleaner to flush it out a bit first . Kind of a messy , time consuming job but it works for me .

Also had one sticky throttle that turned out to be the grip itself dragging on the housing slightly . I cut a ring out a a piece of clear , very thin , hard plastic ( I think it came in a new shirt I bought ; you know , the thin , plastic form that keeps the shirt in shape in the package ) . Removed the grip and slid the plastic ring over the throttle tube and reinstalled the grip . Viola , no more sluggish , dragging throttle .
 
Ditto on the cable luber. Clean it with contact cleaner first. If that doesnt work just buy a new bike!
 
Ditto to most all the stuff mentioned so far, the only thing I do that I haven't seen mentioned yet is I've always used powdered graphite in the throttle tube. The other thing is I don't ride in mud very often, it gets my skirt dirty...

You ain't kidding. Put a new set of grips on the night before one of my on sons bikes, The next A.M. I was tearing the throttle tube apart and cleaning inside and the bar end with starting fluid like a maniac. Barely made practice.
Crap was caked up in there so bad you would'a thought I sprayed foam insulation in that thing...

Get a good aluminum tube with bearings, or try the grips (non glue) that tighten on with allen screws, comes with the throttle tube.
ODI grips (had to go out in garage to find them) LOL! They are a little tough on the hands.
 
My stock throttle tube end was cut off, for bark busters. I know that it's not hitting the end of the bar. And I think I will order a motion pro tube with the bearings. Had one on my 04 crf250, kept the throttle nice.

Lotsa suggestions here and I'll start pecking away at most, thanks for the input.
 
That KX hits so hard that it totally compresses the shock as that poor guys weight transfers back.
What a Classic!.....Long live the Two-Stroke.
…..and that’s only a 250…..could you imagine that guy on a 500?????
