    Old days vs Today

This is me and some buddies at Mid Ohio watching the GP races. Don't remember for sure, but think the main class was the 125's this day, with Hannah running just for show, as he was running the 250 class for points that year. That's me flipping off whoever took the pic. Mike Hawkins

    Old days vs Today

Smith Road, George would let me run the TT in the old timers class, which then was 40 and over, I wouldn't take any trophies, won every time. George got the biggest kick out of it, he would give me a t shirt each time. Mike Hawkins

    Old days vs Today

I was probably there that day. We went to Smith Road every time they raced, ( every other Sunday and twice on holidays). Raced CR125 and CR250, then YZ400, then TT500 then 79 XR500, long before 4 strokes were cool. Agree on all the above. Mike Hawkins

    Ohio track

Raced mx at Norwalk once in '77 on a YZ400. Won the race but bent my handlebars clearing the double and landing with a splat.

    Best bike cleaner?

+1 on the simple green 50/50 with water. I just hose all the mud I can off, spray the whole bike with SG, let it sit for a minute then hose everything off. I towel the bike off, the fire it up and ride it up and down the street a couple of times just to dry out the brakes. When I go to put it...

Hi, that was your buddy I was talking about. This wasn't my bike, kinda wish it was. Just posted the pick because I liked the bike. Talked to your buddy for awhile about the bike. Nice guy. Mike H.

    Sunday practices

I don't race anymore. I raced every Sundays from spring to late fall from 1972-1982. Now I just go to places where it's not too crowded to get some ride time in on tracks and depending what bike I bring, some trail riding too. Back then, we only had about 6 classes, motos were longer, and we...

    75 Hodaka 100cc's

I collect hodakas and belong to the Hodaka Club. The road toads aren't that desirable. Later model for Hodaka. Different engine than the earlier models. Went to primary kick and oil injection, and more weight. Chrome tank bikes are more sought after, led by the early super rats. Guys are racing...

Best dirt bike crash ever! Saw this on Thumpertalk.

Reminds me of the peat bog in the Blackwater 100, except the BW bog was much bigger. Buried my bike right to the seat.

open riding on MX track and Woods trails @ Lightning Raceway

The trails are pretty good. The ones in the woods are challenging, some rocky, rutted up hills and downhills, remind me of crow canyon. Also easy trails out around the open fields, what we called cowtrails back in the old days. Track is fun too. Mike Hawkins

Ohio Motorcycle ( Hilliard & Oakwood V) Out of Business

Never could understand how they stayed open as long as they did. Every time I went in there, even on a Saturday, there was never more than a few people in the store. Most of the newer dealers don't stock much in the way of parts. The only ones that do are the old timers like Sills and Breyleys...

    Vintage MX Races

When I was around 22' back in '78' I raced a TT500 at Smith Road for one season. All I did was put a White Brothers pipe on it. George would let me run it in the old timers class because of the weight disadvantage, and the fact that he liked four strokes back when nobody was running one. I...

    Lightning raceway harescramble 11/3/13

I was out there Tuesday by myself and managed to find the arrows from the last hare scrambles. Lot of up and down some pretty good rock strewn, half washed out hills. Definitely not your Sunday trail ride. Had a good time. Mike Hawkins

Awesome 125 vs 250F video....with a local boy tearing it up!

Bet that guy on the 250 had nightmares for a week after that. That angry buzzing bee he couldn't shake. Cool video. Mike Hawkins

    Recently deceased tracks.

I raced from 72-83. Barnhill raceway in between streetsboro and Ravenna, Meadowview raceway on Frost road, Charleston raceway, right around the corner from OIR, Cloverleaf speedway in Valleyview, Norwalk raceway next to the dragstrip, the original Mid-Ohio rack where they ran the GPs, Mespo moto...

    Crazy for a CT70?

Here's one I'm working on right now. Real forks with hydraulic disc brake, alloy swingarm, 88cc high compression bore kit with cam and bigger carb, alloy straight through exhaust, gas shocks with reservoirs, bigger handlebars than stock. The red one in the background is gonna be rebuilt but...

Nice video Indy. Looks like you needed narrow bars for that one. How many miles was the total ride? Mike Hawkins
