AMA age?

Guess this coulda been a general question, but in terms of about AMA age, is it the age you are at the first of the year and when indeed you have a birthday that year for the next age? Guess my real question is, if a kid turns 7 in September, can he ride 7 year old age classes that entire year as well as the 6 year old classes for that year? Asking for a friend...

For youth classes, AMA age is as of January 1 but this mainly refers to being allowed to run the LOWER age class all year long. You cannot run a HIGHER age class until the actual Bday, and if you do move up to higher class on Bday, then they can no longer run the lower class the rest of the year. It's referred to as "self-advancement" if you do that.

Vet classes go by age on that date, no Jan 1 nonsense. The only exception is for LL, the vet class age goes by age at the time of the National. My Bday is July 27, so I can race Areas and Regionals for example when I was 49 because I was 50 before the actual national.
