Hershey we recently closed our company warehouse and the warehouse Mgr who ran the place including maintenance was let go he finishes up in September. You want to pm me your number if it sounds like something you may be able to work with? I'll vouch for this guy heck of a worker and is used to getting up early as the warehouse opened at 530 every morning...
 
It's fantastic that he is open to train anyone! And doesn't require a bachelor degree as it seems every decent job has that requirement anymore.
 
This is an all too common issue.
There has been a major shortage of fresh entries into the trade for many years now. (all skilled trades really)

And honestly, if I had to start over again, the way I had to when I was young, (particularly becoming an apprentice in a non union shop again), I wouldn't do it, I would change occupations. Looking back I still can't believe we were able to survive and provide for our families as bad as our wages, benefits, and work conditions were. IT SUCKED! And we worked for one of the largest, and busiest contractor in Central Ohio. And we did big jobs too.

And breaking in unskilled newbies isn't without risk in the electrical trade.
It's kind of funny, but my youngest son is a 10+ year Journeyman electrician, and I worry about him getting hurt on the job more now than I ever did before. But I've been at it for 35 years now, and have seen a lot.
A local contractor had an employee fatality, a married 24yr old, earlier this Spring. Electrocuted.

Our local Vocational school gets many entries into the electricity program but most drop out and go back to their home schools. Very few finish the two year programs. Sad part is that they have jobs waiting for them if they do graduate. They are ushered right into the apprenticeship. But none want it?

Recently watching Nightly Business Report, a news person reporting on the drop in housing sales and starts in June. It wasn't due to lack of sales, but a shortage of skilled contractor help to build the new homes.
Upon further questioning it was actually revealed that it wasn't actually a shortage of skilled tradesman, but a shortage of "Skilled Mexican immigrant- tradesmen". Shortage primarily due to excessive deportation. The builders want to pay immigrant wages for their Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers etc.

Sad situation.

Sad Indeed. I think this is what Trump uncovered and what other politicians are grappling with.
I commend you Dave for taking on someone as a apprentice. I prefer to train employees in my business. The ones who go to accredited schools to learn my business are nothing more than book trained and haven't a clue.
 
Mike Rowe talks alot about people not wanting to be in skilled trades anymore and he is a very big advocate of reaching new workers in the youth.

I am very fortunate to work for great non_union concrete contractor out of Akron. I just switched to one of the grade crews along with driving truck and hauling equipment...of all the stories I hear, my company takes very good care of us.

I see it from two main ways...companies wanting to get work done as cheap as possible (immigration and cheap labor rates), no influx of new workers because I really think many youth don't want to work and get their hands dirty.
 
Millenials were fed the If you don't go to college you'll fail at life.

If you're done with books and don't want anything to do with college then you can sign up for the vo-Ed.

The stereotype was only morons go to the vo Ed. Which is total bullshit.

An apprenriceship yields a capital gain ten fold over a $100,000 (schidty) college education at 8% interest. I hope my little brother goes into a trade and doesn't take on crippling debt.

I'm a huge supporter of continuing education. You learn that being a student never ends. But college is one of the most corrupt rackets going. Our niece is going through that mess right now

My oldest son and daughter both scoffed at going to vocational school, and both later regretted it. And they both went on to college, but they realized they wasted a really good free opportunity. And the funny but sad thing is, my younger son went to the vocational school, entered the apprenticeship and has had more employment, and has significantly out-earned his brother and sisters.

I think that depends entirely on what you choose to go to school for. It may not be 'right', but you have to either get lucky, or have great foresight at the age of 17 or 18 as to what you pick as your field of study for the next 4-6-8+ years of your life.
 
Yea that's a good point too.
My boy was just plain greedy. He knew what I did and how much I made, and said "heck, even I can do that".:D

What he really cared about was cool cars and girls. And with a pocket full of money, he could get both.

Case western sells bachelor degree nursing education for around $150,000. The govt will loan anyone that money to attend.

Tri c charges about 10,000 for the entire program. Why does the government lend parent plus Loans to the 150k private institution? The case student makes no more money outta school than the tri-high student. ---oh tri high. ....the un cool stereotype for going to a community college.....imagine that.

That new graduate will onlyake 43,000-51,000 outnof school. And after about 10 years at the bedside will make maybe near 60,000.

Sounds great right ? Not with 150k debt at 5-8% interest.

College is a racket like mentioned. It's complete bulkshit that the govt writes checks to colleges for whatever he tuition costs.

That's why we have all these pop up schools in cleveland. They prey on the hood. Knowing Theyll be awarded govt loans. And there graduation rate is below 10%. But they don't care because the government cut them that fat tuition check. And the people that were prey who drop out will never pay a penny of it back. Ever.

By dropout I mean use the refund for wheels for their chevy.....never attend class.
