Delta Ohio, AHRMA this week

So we have some of the most unique MX history right here in Ohio at Delta Raceway. As you may know the AMA claiming rule allowed anybody in the field to "BUY" any other bike in the same race for a set price like 2x retail, nobody had ever done it but Marty Smiths 125RC2 was claimed by a privateer for $2,500 at Delta, probably a 50K Factory Bike, its a great story and an important part of MX history, the link takes you to the full story on Terry Good's MX Works Bikes web page.

And this weekend we have a chance to race vintage, post vintage, and modern support class at the same venue.

WOW !!!! That # 33 Maico looks like he launched over that water tower! Anyone know who this rider is ? He looks really fast, wonder if he is a retired pro ?

Dude's been AWOL this year, retired but not really a PRO, more of a MAD MAN on a MAICO, aka Denny Burkett

I saw Burkett attempt a triple at the last AMA vintage race last year in Indiana, he only made it over the first two landed on his ass and hard. No more racing that day, he was walking but not very well.....
 
Yep, thats him. I saw him use that Maico to drive a fence post in the ground at Marion county earlier this year, total BADASS !!!!

That was a classic flying W-the bike went for a while without him. I was one of the people that ran over to him on the ground. I think it was about 4 guys and a gal-I believe she was a nurse. So he's lying on his back, really not saying too much besides "I think my it's my back". She's pushing around on the lower part of his stomach and asking questions. He says "you keep pushing down there like that and I am probably going to get an erection". You see this big smile inside his helmet and everyone just starts laughing their a#@!s off. Not long after he said "I think I okay" he got up and like Mike said moved slowly back to his pit. I laughed about it for like a week, truly one of the funnier things I've seen. I was just so unexpected. Didn't know he wasn't out this year but I haven't made an AHRMA event yet either.

If you're on the fence about Delta make it happen. Great track - they add a ton of real estate to the usual track with a great sand section, hills, etc. I was shocked how good it was last year and I think they said it was laid out similar to the summer Inter-AMA they held in 73. Basically a National before they had them. Good weekend period because you get to watch modern bikes Saturday night under the lights. They have Friday as well it appears. Would be worth the trip just to watch a bunch of racing really.
 
Nearly 2 mile track

4 lap first motos, 3 lap second motos

2 classes = well over an hour of track time

Good size gates for my races, with guys to race against - so much more fun to battle

Deep sand sections

Long fast straights

Big bowl turns

Lots of reasonable doubles

Whoops - but not too big

First race on the 84 YZ250 - thumbs up especially with a bit of air in the forks

Hurt the motor on the 79 KX in a battle and blew a fork seal - need to figure out what happened to the motor

Perfect weather

An active track - races every weekend - watched modern bikes under the lights on Saturday night

Good to see the all the Mikes and Bill - they all raced hard in tight races. Mike and Bill got tangled together - both are likely a bit sore today - how are you guys doing?

What a blast - High on my return list.

An improvement suggestion would be to break and to do track maintenance between first and second motos instead of watering during a moto.
 
What I really liked was pulling the numbers for gate picks! My brother racing for one of the first times in 16 yrs,says if he pulls a low number he will switch with me,I say no it will be alright.he pulls #2,I reach in and pull #1!!

Agree with Dano on everything in his note. Really a fun day, great track, great people = great day. They plan to hold one of the AHRMA Great lakes regionals next year, its a must do.

Good to see Henry Gref racing at 74, the guy is an inspiration to me. Henry raced at Delta at their first ever Pro race, the 1971 TRANS-AM.
 
Long track....lots of deep sand and NICE safe jumps. A few of the jumps were over 60 feet. They only cut out one rhythm section . I got in a tangle with Bill88 on the second moto start , could have been bad but we were both ok. (go pro too) . I felt great after a few motos back on the old RM.
It got dusty towards the end but im glad it wasn't mud! 10-15 in each moto was a recipe for good racing. Nice level parking . They had a great announcer all day and played music all day too!
The Saturday night program was entertaining and over by 11. Plenty of lights on the track and the pits. It reminded me of a Meadowlarks on steroids. Lots of history there and old pictures and old memorabilia to prove it. Including the ambulance and water truck!!
 
Yeah great track - had fun while I was racing. Where Mike and I tangled was right after the first turn(a right) after the start straight. They watered it pretty hard and it was pure grease that nobody was expecting. Not my plan to go a bit left all all but I would have hit someone else, as usual it all happened fast. I'm fine but I do have a nice Zorro like "Z" on my hip from where I was stuck to his RM. Very glad neither of us got much from it for sure. I took the snapped clutch lever, torn jersey, torn shroud, and massive amount of mud on bike/me on what was otherwise a pretty dry day as a sign and called it good.

Mike if you have go pros of that please post or PM to me if you want. Actually I would love to have the first 250 int moto in full if you have it, well until you passed me at least. Thanks
