Excellent read. If you haven't subscribed to MXA, then you're really missing out.

This latest article hits the nail on the head with kids transitioning from 85s to the four strokes. I've always advocated that the kids step up to a 125 2 stroke first. And it seems mxsports is going in the right direction by adding the 125 BC class for the kids.

Anyway everyone should read this article.

Good read Georgie, I couldn't agree more!!

Its the weight of the child that always worries me. Glad to see more options for kids to race 125's. Would love schoolboy1 locally.

Totally agree!! Having a 12 year old that is too tall and heavy for a 85. He is NO WHERE near ready to race a 250F. He has ridden one, but that's a big difference from trying to race one. They really do need to promote the 125 class for teenagers.

Guess this article just proved Knox has been right this whole time! JO loves it when Knox is right, lol.

are the kids really to blame for not being ready to ride a 250f? or is it the parents who buy and put the kid on a 250f? The kid can only ride what the parents allow him to ride. and dont say the kid cant be competitive against 250fs on a 125..... Gerad Steinke proved to the world you can make a 125 sing and beat thumpers, or a local example would be someone like John Wells or Zach Rogers, i have watched them put a hurting on 250f's aboard a 125.

I could agree with that. I don't think I got my first 32 hp 250F until I was 17. I was always tall and skinny.

130lb kids probably find it difficult to get out of a sudden sketchy situation.

When I broke my collarbone at 15. I did it on my RM125. I always thought I probably could of saved it on my supermini. That was the first year I raced both and I think I felt invincible on just the 125 because of the power until I found myself careening sloppily towards the ground. That's just an example of how much more security I think a kid can get when they're on the lighter smaller bikes. I would get sloppy on a supermini and pretty much bring it back, wasn't happening on bigger bikes. Big bikes are a whole different animal and a brand new learning curve.

I just looked at the classes for Daytona. Was looking to get a 125 for Matthew before then, and have him ride schoolboy. Their Schoolboy 1 is 12-16. Here it is 12-14. They also offer two Mini Sr classes, Mini Sr 1 is 12-13 and 2 is 14-15. 85 Open is 9-12. I am just thinking with no time on a 125, I keep Matthews 85 and let Daytona be his last race on it.

He is really just getting too tall and weighs about 150. Just a lot of money to spend on building a big wheel. Might as well just buy a KTM

Here Schoolboy is 12-16 for the OMA - 122cc - 250cc - No 250 two stroke (which by this rule should not allow any superminis except the Honda 150R)

For the AMA its Schoolboy 1 - 12-16 - 125 two stroke and supermini
Schoolboy 2 - 14-16 - 122cc - 250cc two or four stroke - No superminis

This is right out of the 2015 rulebook. I was thinking you could not ride a 250 two stroke in schoolboy 2 but i don't see it in the rules any where.

Big wheel kx 100 msrp for a meager $100 more And you're getting big wheels and longer swingarm.

But yea 150 lb. good weight for a 125.

Just my opinion, but they should encourage kids to stay off 250Fs until they are 16. Just my opinion.
I was just reading class structure for the AMA Texas series
The “major” change for 2016 is for restriction of ages on 250cc and 450cc motorcycles. Beginning this new season, riders under 14 years old will not be allowed to compete on anything larger than a 125cc bike. Additionally, riders under 16 years old will not be allowed to ride a bike larger than 250cc. These changes will take effect beginning with the AMA Texas Winter Series. This will bring the ages closer together and more competitive very quickly.

John, if I could do it over again, I would not have spent all the money on Jonathan's supermini, it was to much money for such a short time actually on the bike. If he was one of the smaller kids who would get years and years on the bike then it makes sense but if your boy is a heavier kid who is growing tall quickly its to short lived to get your monies worth. Not to mention, I got taken to the cleaners on what I sold it for vs. what I had in it.
