Insurance gap coverage...

Alright this is my last year of Nurse Practitioner school. It's getting very intense. I'm doing 250 hours of clinical hour rotatations in 16 weeks, working full time (36 hours a week/ 3 12-hour shifts). I really need to drop down to part time at my job and work weekends only so I can dedicate my weeks to my last year to school. Part time is two 12 hour shifts. That extra 12 hour day really goes a long way when you're up to your eyes in textbooks and clinical rotations. It's never ending learning. My rotations are unpaid. Free labor for the hospitals.

I'm going to be working wekends only, and will have M-F off to study, and meet clinical requirements.

Problem 1:

When I drop down to part time at work, I lose Short term disability and long term disability. So if I get clocked in rush hour traffic....and become hurt and cannot work. I'm screwed.

And if I go back to full time, I have to be back full time for 365 days before short term and long term kick back in. This is insane, I can't go without short term disability/long term disability for two years. Not only becuase I ride dirtbikes....but because a guy I work with recently dropped down to part time. Fell off a ladder, broke his hip. Off work, no income and in his last year of NP school....now he thinks he might lose his house. I don't want to deal with that. I need to find coverage for short term disability, long term and accident. If I can't find it, I'm not gonna drop down to part time, I'll sell my FC250 and just grit it out for 1 year.

Any insurance guys lead me in the right direction ? Ive called Aflac and they can't offer me short term disability or long term unless it's through a group and Cleveland Clinic doesn't deal with Aflac. But even with a group i'm past the clinics open enrollment time frame....so I couldn't even get into a group policy with clinic. Aflac said can offer me an accident policy for $49 a month. It pays for broken bones etc. But I saw in the final page that they do not cover citizens in the Army reserve or national guard....so I don't even think I can get that because I just commissioned into the US Army last month.

I dont know what to do.

Georgie,
I work with a company that can help you out with individual STD and LTD. Just remember, it will not be inexpensive. But you have that your male, young and in good health. Guy like you don't buy STD and LTD! I am impressed that your smart enough to think about your future.

Give me a call and we can discuss.

When you work where I work...you realize that we are all truly broke-ass middle class (that can be wiped out financially in a split second) and we also can die at any second for any reason.

Anyone wanna come to work with me and shadow for a poor outlook on life ?;)

True statement. We had a friend 47, fly to Florida two weeks ago. Next day, dropped dead. Blood clot to the lungs. Only a small life insurance policy through his employer. Nothing to take care of his family he is leaving behind. People just need to budget for a true amount of life insurance to replace their income if something happens. And if you buy a large term policy when your young like you and your wife, it is cheap. Get you a 30 year term.

Medical bankruptcy is the #1 reason for bankruptcy today.

Wow..
I was just reading about that condition and DVT in men last week as I went to my doctor about my knees.

The more I read on here and elsewhere on riding/racing injuries the more contemplative I'm becoming. And staying healthy and fit in your fifties isn't very easy either when you live a hectic schedule.

Make your health and fitness a priority.. without it you won't have a life to live to do all those other things. I work 12hr rotating swing shifts, I have a wife and 5 year old. I try and ride twice a week at minimum and in the gym 5-6 days a week. Usually prep meals on a Sunday for the work week. All those other hetic things in life won't do you any good dead or in a hospital bed cause your sick or diabetic. That's the biggest thing I hear " I don't have time to go to the gym" then they sit down with a beer and watch TV for 2 hours.
