cleaning an old tank??

I found an old chrome Hodaka tank from my youth while cleaning out my moms garage. Is there a way to clean off surface rust without destroying the chrome?? It even has the sticker for how to mix fuel below the cap.. Any ideas????
 
Brasso. Sort of like liquid rubbing compound Amonia based I think. You can find it near the car wax or other cleaning supplies. If you can, get the stuff in the steel container, I think its a little better than the newer stuff in the plastic bottle.
 
I have had a lot of luck using CLR for the inside of tanks,suppost to be safe for chrome bath fixtures so I see no reason it would not work on your toaster tank,in the past I have used 000 steel wool on those to knock down the rust but in most cases it required something a bit more aggressive
