Announced on RacerX he is retiring

Ryan Villopoto's nearly three-month absence—and silence—from the racing world has fueled rumors that he was putting a retirement plan together, and now that has been confirmed via a press release on the Kawasaki Europe website.

Within the PR, Villopoto says this:

“I am grateful for having had the opportunity to do something I have loved since I was a kid and make it into my livelihood. I am grateful for the support of my family for all the years they spent hauling my bikes and me around to races, interrupting their lives in the process. I am grateful for the support of my many sponsors through the years, first and foremost Kawasaki, which has been my bike of choice since my Team Green days. They have been with me through ups and downs, serious injuries and great successes. Kawasaki is a brand that is synonymous with my racing career.

"I am grateful to have had the chance to race with the very best in the world, my competitors in Supercross and Motocross as well as on MXGP. I am grateful to know that our competitiveness helped to continue the growth of our sport.”

Villopoto, who turned pro in late 2005, always preferred to let his results do the talking, so a sudden announcement via a PR, without a farewell speech or appearance at a race, is somewhat fitting.

For the last year, those around sensed that the end was near, as it was obvious that the nine-time AMA National Champion was no longer enjoying his time as a professional racer. A knee injury suffered midway through last year's Monster Energy Supercross run didn't help matters, but Villopoto still needed to race in 2015 to complete the final years of a three-year Monster Energy Kawasaki factory deal.

He switched things up by heading to the MXGPs in Europe, but only made it to one race actually in Europe, the Grand Prix of Trentino in Italy, where he looped out in the second moto and broke his tailbone, and injured his lower back. Those back injuries are still lingering, and Villopoto has decided to step away.

We'll have much, more more on this news, as Villopoto, 27, retires as one of the greatest all-around racers in the history of the sport, capturing multiple titles in AMA 250MX, 450MX and 450SX.

Always sucks when one of the greats retires...seems so early and short in this sport, but 10 years is good I s'pose... Good luck to him...

I love RV like John259 loves JS. Good riddance cry baby. I can't deny his dominance, he is fast and one of the greats, but am I sad to see him go.. Ehh.

The same article was posted all over Europe. I will translate it back into 'Merican for you. "The Americans sent their best over to beat Tony, He could not do it and broke his ass crack trying, so now he is going to quit" . So then we sent an Alessi over to represent "Merica. Who's next? No wonder the world hates us.

Those top 5 MXGP riders are DAMN fast on the tracks over there. Must be because the wheels are on the ground so much, and our guys are used to their wheels spinning in the air for 1/2 a lap.

I think with todays SX tracks and MX tracks becoming more and more jump happy, we will see guys retiring at an early age.

Crazy enough if not for his tailbone injury he just might have pulled off the title this year most of the other top guys are hurt now also...

RV was certainly a great champion, kind of bummer he couldn't have went out a little better. Ricky wrote the best script for his exit.

In terms of the MXGP, a rider with some offroad background would have to help. Maybe Plessinger will continue to get faster...maybe he might develop into an mxgp competitor someday??

I totally agree with this. Seems kind of lame. Was expecting to see him go out on top with team USA at MXoN. Some people might say "he doesn't owe the fans anything", but I disagree.

Speaking of MXON, with RV done and rumors of Dunge not wanting to compete at MXON this year (doesn't sign autograph for family decked out in USA apparel on 4th of July, now doesn't want to represent USA. Coincidence? I think not. Dungey clearly hates America) ... who do we send!? Barcia Martin Bagget. Meh.

There all just tired of the bull.... I don't blame them I've been around this sport since the 80's and thanx to Daley Coombs, mxsports, and the ama this sport is going the wrong way. Everything cost to much, the pay is crappy, the tracks are getting more dangerous. Rv isn't the first nor will he b the last. I think a young man by the name of Travis pastrana walked away because of the b.s. He wasn't a robot and wasn't gonna be told what to do and what not to do, and to this day he is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet because he's doing what he wants not what they ( the factories, ama, etc) want him to do! Obviously everyone has there own opinion and I don't think rv has to prove anything to anyone. One other thing, James Stewart would have retired because of the stupid rules if it weren't for the fans and I applaud him for that, but if they give him anymore crap he'll be gone also!

James is the only one who gets paid to sit and watch, and DNF. He's like a second string quarter back, collecting the check.

I have to agree, the sport is going in the wrong direction and some riders are getting tired of the scene in general

I can see why the riders get Burned out and no longer enjoy it. Supercross is entirely way too long of a season. Then you get all of two weeks then outdoors start. Once outdoors is over you get rite back into testing for monster cup and red bull strait rhythm. Then you test for weeks for supercross. Just seems like a never ending season.

Guess I don't see the never ending season as a big deal. This is their JOB. I don't get months off my job. The get paid to race. So part of that is training and riding all year long. As for the MEC and Red Bull crap, they don't have to race that crap. They chose to.

I see your point John but our job allows time for a life also, what else do they have much time for
I realize their salary is WAY more then mine but for the years they race their life is in some ways on hold
I just don't see where they have much time for anything but their job
