One topic that we often hear discussed in the sport is the purse payout to racers from the race organizers. There's no denying that riders at the top levels of the sport are paid quite well by motorcycle manufacturers, apparel brands, energy drinks, and other associated sponsors, but purse money from races make up very little of their income (the same cannot be said for privateers, as many often rely on purse and contingency money). As the ruling body of the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series, the FIM and AMA have released the purse payout for the 450 class at every event that will be held in 2019, with a total sum of $86,807 paid to the riders per race.

The figures posted below do not include the bonuses that some OEMs pay factory riders for exceptional finishes, which can often reach six-figures for the main event win and are not readily released by the brands, or the contingency plans in place by all six brands, additional dollars that can quickly add up for an independent racer. After a quick online search, we found the rough contingency amounts announced by OEMs ($1,353,200 series purse posted by Honda, $1,339,600 series purse posted by Yamaha, $1,433,100 series purse posted by KTM and $367,200 series purse posted by Husqvarna [circa 2018 numbers]), and you can see that there is more to be made.


As we stated above, the salaries and bonuses are how riders make much of their money. This is purely the promoter purse payout for the 450 class. The FIM-AMA-Feld have slightly increased the purse compared to 2018; check out our post from last year’s race to see the changes.

I make about $1500 a week if I don’t work overtime or pick up more shifts.

But only costs me $40 in gas to get there.
And my equipment is provided by the hospitals.


So they’re making decent wage but they’re independent contractors. So all their money goes back into racing.


Not my fault though. If they want to do that then sweet.

And in the grand scheme of things....they’re pro until They’re 30ish. Retirement is 64-70. So they still got 30
Years after their pro career to button up a personal career outside of racing.

Barcia got at least a $500,000 win bonus, probably makes $500-$750k a year from Yamaha and a hefty salary from A-stars. He's good.

We love it but have to realize its a very MINOR sport, very little market interest, look at the TV deals, or lack of deals. Might be on "real" network TV one a year, very few sponsors outside of the industry. MX bike sales are 10% of what the were in the glory days. Its a niche sport, THERE IS NO $$$$$$ to distribute.

Feld numbers: “nearly 1million in attendance over 17 rounds in 2018.” So we will say 900k. What’s the average cost of a ticket? $25... that is $1,300,000 in ticket sales per race. Less the 100k going to the racers. Of course there are a ton of expenses that goes into putting on a race but clearly the payback can and should be much higher.
In 1990 20th in the main paid $1000.(adjusted to 2018 that is $1921) That was long before a TV package and attendance was much less. While the series had big sponsors in Coors and Camel, I’m sure it’s not near what Monster pays.
The sport has grown 100 times over, yet the racers make the same in purse money.

For that source that probably is correct.

Obviously this is dated but JLaw's bonus was $50k per heat race win,$250k per main and
$1 million for the lites championship.

Barcia isn't a top pick to win mains or championships so therefore his bonuses will be higher than most.

Whether I am right or wrong there's 10-13 riders in that top 20 that is set for life or will have a nice paved road for them until retirement.

JLaw did make very good money and publicly started that when he banked 1million, he would be gone. He's gone

Not sure Surovick got JLaw that kind of bonus money, but he did really well, but that was the days of Ninja mortgages for people to buy 300-400 K homes without an income. Prior to 2009, stupid money was thrown around . Not today.

Very few are making 300K or more. They can't even get money for Reed to ride easily. It took a while . Sport is small, run by a good SX promoter and a small minded MX promoter. Glenn Helen just said FU to motocross and losing money to MX Sports
. The national is going to Pala, or Fox as it is now known by.

I'm down at ClubMX every other weekend. You'd be surprised how many dudes pay for a ride on a team, factory or satillite. Either paying outright, or bringing a sponsor that pays.

Have we become the IRL and NASCAR? Where talent and what you've accomplished in lower levels of racing, mean nothing. You bring a sponsor with you and your in. The Indy 500 is probably the biggest race ever that is full of buy a ride for a month guys.
