A Bit Of A Memory Lapse .

I don't know why, but after all these years it has occurred to me how I've kind of buried the memory of the 100cc class of motocrosser's, from the late 70's and early 80's. We're always so focused on the 125's that I really overlooked how popular the 100's were.

This morning it hit me how much I poured over these bike articles and RM/YZ shootouts in my Dirt Bike magazines when I was a teenager, especially 1978, 1979.

My buddy Terry had a Kawasaki KD100, but it wasn't even in the same league as the RM or YZ.
There was also a farm kid that lived down the road from us, that had an RM100, and I recall being in awe of how mean that bike looked. I wanted one bad!

And thinking on it some more, I'm remembering a conversation with Mike Wheeler a couple years ago at Rt 62, and he was telling me how there has been a resurgence of building and racing this class of bikes on the west coast.

In my head, I've kind of grown to just regard these bikes as just sort of the "mini" class of motocrosser's, kind of like how the 80 and 85cc bikes of today. But forgetting that back then, these were cutting edge innovative racing dirt bikes, that were part of the big war between Suzuki and Yamaha. They were competing to own the class.

The good old days of two-strokes. This is the 100 Pro class at Saddleback Park — Chris Parker (514), Mark Lawrence (11D), Jody Weisel (front number plate flapping) and Randy Skinner sweep down the road turn. Yes, that is a Jeff Ward Racing Products-framed XR75 with a sleeved-down CR125 engine in it leading a Yamaha YZ100, Suzuki RM100 and another sleeved-down Honda CR125 (only in a full-size frame). These bikes were cheap to buy, simple to maintain and a blast to race.

My '79 YZ 100 was my last 100. I was 10 years old on a 100. I remember my mom saying I could barely touch the ground!
