How much it is worth??

Since my recent motor malfunction, I've been trying to figure out what to do with my bike...

As I see it, I have 3 choices. Part it out, sell it like it is, or fix it. I know its gonna need a new crank, cylinder, piston(I already have it), and cases. Then there are the seals, bearings, and whatever else is broke inside.

Anyone have any idea what the bike is worth if I would sell it "as-is"?

What year is it?

First thing I'd do is tear the motor down and try to estimate repair cost.

Jon,

Take a look at Ebay and see how much major components have sold for there for 2009 HONDA 450's......... things like wheels, radiators, carbs, forks, shock, triple clamps, and brake assemblies........... all bring fairly large chunks of cash quickly for certain bikes. All of that stuff should be good on your bike and bring a lot more money for people looking for spares than trying to sell it whole and get a decent amount for it. Think if you can get $500 for both wheels, $100 for each radiator, $200 for carb, $300 for forks, $250 for Shock, $150 for both brake assemblies and you've got lots of cash to go for a new or used bike already........ Plus there is more there to sell off......... but some stuff just doesn't sell when parting out and you'll be left with some stuff too.

I parted out a Junk KTM 200 and got enough money to buy a really nice full running KTM 200 in it's place.......... Parts seem to be worth more than the whole these days for people that want spares, but not whole bikes as a spare.

Guess the year would help. It's a 2009 CRF 450.

I'm gonna get it torn down and get a total on parts for sure, but I'm just lookin at my options. It will hopefully get torn down this week.

Any thoughts to what you would buy if you just went the route of getting rid of it and getting a new bike?

I figured I would have to buy all new parts. It would make me feel better riding it with new stuff. Prolly OEM too.

If I were to sell it, I'd prolly get another crf 450. Just would try to upgrade a year or two. Work sucks right now, so I'm really fighting myself on what to do with this thing.

I know the parting out route would be a hassle to deal with but in my opinion that would seem to be the route to go if you can deal with the incovenience of waiting for the parts to sell and packing them up to ship out. I have a bunch of part stuff that I keep telling myself I'll but on Ebay but still haven't done it, so I can understand it'd be a bit of chore to part it out.

I'd imagine you favor 4 strokes too much to ever consider a 2 stroke as a replacement?

Last year the valvetrain went on my 06 crf250. I parted it and bought a '10 crf450..

I've gotten close to $2000 on the part out.. but I think that's more than I would of gotten if I sold it as is.

On an 09 thats a tough one. It should still be holding more value. And parting a bike sucks. Just fix it! ;)

I rode sharc's 144 yz at Monster Mtn, and loved it, but I think I'd only own a 125 as a 2nd bike. I've kicked around going back to a 250 2 stroke, but I don't know if I really could.

Isn't Jud Linder looking to sell his RM250 2-stroke to get a 2009 or newer CRF450? Maybe you two could work something out...

I would just fix it. I would think the cost might be a few g's but if thats all you get out of parting it out, then.... plus there would be no hassel with listing/selling stuff( and who knows how long it may take ). just shop around on the internet for a couple days and Im sure you'll find most everything you need. let me know if you need help.

I do like the idea that if I fix it, my motor will be brand new for the most part. (at least the major stuff, with the exception of valves) If I buy another used bike, I'm just buying another motor with hours already on it.

Alexander, the difference between parting it out and fixing it is that with Parting it out, you get a few G's to spend on something else......... with fixing it, you spend a few G's to keep what you have already. With Jon's work being bad right now....... he may not have a few G's to get it going again and with riding season coming up....... he probably wants to ride.

It's a tough call, because you are going to dump lots of money into a bike that is still only worth x amount in running condition. Is it worth spending $3500 on a bike that is only worth $3500 when you have it running? Or getting $2000 out of it by parting it out and putting in $1500 to get another bike of the same vintage for yourself? Spending $1500 sounds better than $3500 to me to get back to the same place.....

I have 2 words for you: P A R M A D A V E ! Dave will hook you up right! With a quick turn around too! He also takes credit cards if cash is problem. Why buy a new bike when yours is not old and you could have a new PD motor for a fraction of the cost! You won't be sorry! Rich

Personally Jon I would rebuild. You MIGHT get 2G parting it out but it will be a drawn out process. Then it is a HUGE hassle packaging everything, getting paid, taking everything out to be shipped. I have parted out a few mustangs. In those circles they are in high demand and easy to sell the parts. I will never do it again because the money you make just isnt worth the time and hassle involved.

For me working on bikes and rebuilding them is far easier than all the garbage of parting it out. Your bike is in GREAT shape with low hours. If what Robin says makes sense for you then great. But for me if I am going to have 3500 in a bike I damn well would rather have it in a bike I know and is basically brand new than someone elses used bike you dont really know how many hours are really on it.

In all honesty I also think you will be hard pressed to get 2G out of it by mid summer. But that is just my opinion

You must be reading my mind. Thats pretty much what I've been thinking. I don't think i'd get enough money parting it out unless I sat on it half of the year. I looked on ebay at wheels and the rear shock, and they're just not bringing what I'd want for them.

I don't know how much money you're willing to spend but I just bought my new '11 crf 450 for 7 thousand out the door.. and a lot of places go as low as 6500 I just didn't feel like driving 4 hours one way.. ya i know thats bad.. but it was a pretty good deal since the sticker was 8200 or w/e 8199? I was able to keep my 250 2 stroke..

I don't see how buying a used bike would be better then fixing your current one, because (unless bought from a respected frnd) you don't know how they treated the bike.. id rather spend 2g's on a new engine then 7g's on what would pretty much be the same bike..

Go to www.CR500riders.com and post it, or you might have to join or have someone you know, like me post it for you with you info on it, and you'll sell the whole roller in a heart beat. There are guys dying to get a roller for thier AF conversion.

Actually, if I had the money I'd buy it myself for that reason, but your roller is worth more than my running 03 YZ450F.
