Looking for advice

I'm a 40 year old and up until now I've always made sure my son had a bike and stuff he needed for riding. I've spent my time taking him to the track and helping him get better. Now he is on a 250f and can hold his own with the fast guys, now I want to ride a little just for fun. My problem is I've never actually rode a dirtbike on a track and don't want to go out and piss people off being in the way. Any advice on places to try,or should I just stay away.

Welcome Motodad! I'm 46 now. I plan to ride til the bitter end. It's never too late to enjoy one of life's most rewarding sports. The trick is to not hurt yourself or others while you're learning. You've come to the right place though. The people on here will help you along the way.

I started on the trails. I remember my first track (Honda Hills) like it was yesterday. I really had no business being out there but one lap and I was hooked. When you say on the track does that mean you have lots of experience on the trails and have all your gear and know how to set up your bike for different conditions? What bike do you have? How's your fitness? Where are you located?

I've rode trails in my neighbors woods just enough to get a feel for the bike. I have a 2009 kx250f that I got pretty cheap haha. I need to get some pants and jersey so I don't look like a goon but I have other stuff that I picked up off friends. I'm from canal Fulton area

Oh crap... another one from CF
Go to Hersheys house and practice, He will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know.

For real, Pick a track with open practice and find another old dude to give you some pointers. 40+ guys are the best, most are very helpful.
No matter where you go, as long as you hold your line and don't weave from side to side over the jumps you SHOULD be OK.

Started when I was 40 also. That was 10 years ago! I a friend who helped me a lot, luckily he had a track on his property and I was able to practice there to learn a little bit. Then he introduced me to many others my age who rode and raced.

Once I started going to practice tracks and a few races I found everyone was supportive and helpful. Got a bunch of new friends to ride with now.

It was (is) really not a problem being the slower guy. As long as I didn't do something really stupid they go around me and no one complains. I just maintain my line and if I'm rolling a jump I stay to one side or the other depending on my line approaching the jump.

A good idea is TV Land. You can call Trevor just about any day and ride if he say's it's okay. It may not be prepped, but you can get some track time without a crowd.

A little bit farther for you is our club, Hillside in Saegertown Pa. Can ride anytime. Usually only a few bikes there. We have some good jumps to learn on.

Others on this site can probably find you something closer.

Welcome to moto mayhem just hold your line and everything will be fine. Don't anticipate were they might go just stay in your line. the faster riders will figure it out.

You won't piss anyone off, except a few jerk wad 19 year olds who aren't going anywhere in moto--but think they are. Blow em off. Get out there and have fun! Enter and exit track at safe places and use hand signals when doing so. Rest of the time hold your line, no cross overs and you'll be just fine. Welcome!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. To bad this riding season is possibly over. One more question, when they split up practice who should I ride with? Vets? C riders? Minis and women ? Lol

Most splits are for big bikes and then little bikes and women... I'd recommend u go out with the quads so u are only bike on the track lol. In all seriousness u will be fine with other big bikes. I'm from Perry Township maybe if you go riding around here sometime hit me up I usually end up riding alone most days and it's kinda boring

Haha smart ass.

Seriously though, you are welcome to come to my place and ride any time. Lots of room to practice. Just give me a call. I will send you a PM with it. I wont teach you anything other than how to crash and go slow. I have lots of corners and table tops to learn on, there is plenty of flat area to practice on too.

Take hershey up on going out to his track, my son loved it. Plus you've got me thinking, once I buy my son a new 250f, I might start to ride a little again.

VETS They have to get up and go to work the next day.

If you have a bike now go race extendedcross this weekend at big game. Always a good vet turnout. You'll have a lot of fun.
