2000 AMA District 12 Awards Banquet
The Resurrection of AMA District 12
By John "PitRacer" Kreps
New Philadelphia, OH, Feb. 17, 2001

Late in the year 1999, thousands of people were planning for the end of the world. They were stocking up on bottled water, canned goods, and buying every generator they could get their hands on. As the last tick of time expired from the century, many thought the world as we know it would expire too. There was, however, a small group of people from northern Ohio who had other ideas. They were looking at the end of 1999 as a new beginning, a rebirth for northern Ohio AMA Motocross racing. These people were about to revive something that had been dormant for more than 15 years, AMA District 12 Motocross.

They looked at the turn of the century simply as a marker that their inaugural season was about to begin, and they were running out of time. Four out of six tracks were brand new ventures for the season and had to not only help rebuild the District 12, but complete their own tracks and organizations as well. Beans Bike Park, Dirtworld Motocross Park, Scenic Highlands Motosports Park, and Crow Canyon Raceway worked hard all winter along with existing motocross tracks Broken Spokes and Western Reserve Motorcycle Club, and by February 2000 the first prints of the 2000 AMA District 12 Motocross & Hare Scramble schedule were hitting mailboxes all over Ohio.

The first season back for the District 12 is now history and culminated on Saturday, February 17, 2001 with the 2000 Awards Banquet in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Arriving at the event you would never guess that this was basically a first year organization. The amount of product and awards provided by District 12 sponsors was amazing, and these were distributed both to the racing awards winners and also to many happy door-prize drawing winners. One of the happiest drawing winners was Jennifer Roberts, a WML pro racer, who left the event with the top door prize of a Cannondale F400 mountain bike. Countless other drawing winners left with prizes ranging from track memberships to helmets and EZ-Ups. Very few attendees left the event empty-handed.

Along with the Overall 2000 awards and 2000 Series awards, four racers were awarded for their efforts throughout the year as the Overall Points Champions of 2000. In motocross, Zachary Knotts took home the Overall Bike Championship while Alan Roe received the Quad Overall Award. Hare Scrambles also awarded two overall champions, and those racers were Jim Norris for bikes and Justin Brown for the quads. These racers earned more points than anyone else in their respective category for the year 2000.

If 2000 was any indication, good things are in store for northern Ohio racers in the upcoming years. The 2001 season is upon us, and the District 12 will be a great place to spend it.
District 12 would like to thank all of the sponsors who made the 2000 season possible and so successful. I ran across all those old points and articles a few months ago. Crazy all of that information is still out there lol. Miss those days

Any chance these videos are somewhere I could see them? Spokes was then first track I rode at back when I started. Many fond memories of that era.

And thanks John for starting this topic. Some great memories of that era.

Yep they are online - but you have to promise not to make toooo much fun of my stupid site - haha.
The DirtWorld and Spokes videos are just short 30 second clips - state of the art back then.
Just click Motosteel.com in my signature. Click 2004 on the left. These are hosted on my home server so it is not very fast. About 200 hours of recent GoPros too.

Damnit! Babet beat me with a 8-6 to my 7-7 in Plus 30 at Scenic 13 years ago! If I had only known him back then, I would have parked him in moto 2! Unfortunately, I tucked the front and went down in the first corner. F Tim for digging that corner deep as hell prior to the start!
Oh to be 38 again! lol
