When my son started racing a little over 3 years ago we immediately purchased the top-of-the line Leatt. Over those 3 years I’ve read a lot of negative information on the brace (paralysis inducing, etc.) and contemplated putting it in the trash over the winter…I practically made myself sick over this decision. When I saw they came out with the new model I ended up calling them and had a long discussion with one of the tech guys. Obviously, he didn’t/couldn’t address all the negatives because of the potential legal implications but from a very long “father-to-father” discussion he basically implied the new design to be wider at the thoracic base and more flexible…and to have a lower breaking point at the strut than the previous model. Again, I knew the tech wasn’t in a position to address any issues w/previous models, nor did I want to put him in that position, but the fact the design has been modified led me to believe it may be more than a cosmetic & weight reduction improvement - IMHO. Anyway, I bought one and haven’t looked back. If and when a new Thoracic piece becomes available for our older model, I’ll probably purchase that and put it on if I decide to use one – I’m a low flyer AND slow so, not too worried about myself. I know there are no guarantees but I do believe the load transfer “could” help in that worst-case moment. We also saw Woods & Water ride this past weekend and I’d like to test the over-the-protector configuration since my son also rides w/the Proframe.

There definitely needs to be Safety testing and Standards for these devices but that will obviously take time – Snell didn’t get started until the late 50’s and that was after years of helmet use and market saturation. Right now it seems everyone is still in the proof-of-concept stage with these braces and until some third party organization & standards are formed to evaluate all of them, we’ll have to rely on the manufacturers data and hope it’s not all marketing. Leatt states they are collaborating with the SFI Foundation here in the US to create what will become Standard SFI 57.1 that will cover these products – hopefully, it comes sooner than later. More importantly, I hope everyone's opinion and decision on this subject turns out to be the right one.

Rocket, not trying to fight or be a jerk etc,
I don't understand why you keep bringing the experience up. At the end of the day there isn't testing on this brace. QUOTE]

First Georgie, I was bringing up my experience as a rider AGAIN due to Barrinton's comment on it in his response and thought I would expound on that point so people that may not know me at all know that I'm an old guy (42) that has been riding / racing since Age 4, for those that are math challenged, that's 38 years of riding, and all of that is without a neck injury or problem with the brace 3 years and 35 years without the brace. I still hit Loretta Lynns all the time (including this year) and pretty much know what is going on with the sport. I'm here today and will be here tomorrow still riding / racing motorcycles and am not a "Johnny Come Lately" to this party.

I just bought a second Leatt Brace for myself after looking closely at Zman's Alpinestar brace too. They work in very much the same way using the same theory....... and I don't see any testing / lab results by any of the neck brace companies at this point. When I originally purchased my first Leatt....... I watched videos of there testing procedures and dummy falls and swings with a neck brace on........... where those videos are now, I do not know. I didn't get one right away........ I waited, check out other's Leatts, and looked into the info that was available at the time. After watching the videos and seeing how Pitracer's worked / looked on him.......... I got one for myself.

Simple idea is that I believe in the load transfer theory in protecting my neck, if I ever need it. I would wear the Alpinestars brace too as I believe it does the same thing as the Leatt. Those are the only 2 braces I'm familiar with.

I don't believe for a second that Leatt will only help you when dropped on your head straight down like a pencil....... as that's a compression type hit and the Leatt can't protect you from the impact of the compression. It's more for the turning of your head past it's natural movement where your helmet hits the rim and transfers load from your neck to the brace and other parts of your body. I can see where in an extreme backwards neck movement where the load would be transferred to your spine down the "shaft" of the support and may culminate in more pressure at the tip of the support and possibly break your back there. I'm not arguing that it couldn't........... but what if without it, I roll my neck past the point of no return and it snaps and I'm dead on the spot......... is dead better than broken back? Maybe for some the answer is yes........

On top of this, people's bones have different density and strength in their structure, so what may break one persons back, may do nothing to another persons back with stronger denser bones. From Experience, I know that I have very dense strong bones that I'm genetically blessed with, as I've sheered off footpegs and broken handlebars at the clamps while coming up short on large jumps without any damage to my bones. I've watched others case the same jumps and end up with broken wrists / ankles, legs.........

As I stated, I wear the brace as a worst case scenario savior........ I hope to live through a horrific neck bending crash through the load transfer that the brace provides, that's it for my opinion on why I wear a neck brace. If it saves me from death one time, it's more than worth the $395 that I paid for it. Have I ever needed a neck brace yet.......... no, never needed the protection yet in 38 years..... but "WHAT IF???"

Atleast that pregnant test shows you the results. It doesn't just explain the type of test. I just want statistics and a written report. Not two paragraphs and a picture of two guys fiddling with a dummy upside-down.

everyone contributed to that thread you twinkie-footed sphinctermuffin goo-holed wangbaby

Maybe ALL OF YOU should send these 10 pages to LEATT Corp........ANd see what happens...This topic on ALL forums goes for pages....ALL THE FORUMS..Vital..Thumpertalk...Pitracer...Motonews....RONRONMX....all of them should be sent in..I spent alot of$$$$$$$ also......

If people demanded testing they would do it. The only way to really show we want testing is to boycott the product. Don't buy new units. But that's like people boycotting gas. Won't happen.

Then do what needs to be done georgie. From a fathers point my sons safty is 1st before anything and I went out and bought the brace when they 1st came out hell had to borrow money at that time to even get it but having that on him made me feel better and also made him feel better. Alot of Pro racers has the brace also alot of older riders have the brace ALOT of people have the brace but according to you everyone is wrong and mislead. Where are you getting your info about all this? Youtube? I would like to see your hard core facts why you believe the brace comp is misleading people. There is NOTHING fullproof in this sport just to many ways a person can crash so if the brace saves more than it hurts then it does what it is nade for and thats safty. I feel you post up this kinda stuff to try to feel important and want to change the world just like your C class rant just alot of opinions flying and nothing getting changed in the sport just people being split about an opinion. Show proof hard core proof these braces are bad and do more harm than good and Il be the 1st to toss my sons in the trash but intill I see it myself his brace stays on. As of right now I will put my trust and faith in the makers of the brace and not into a male nurse/anouncer that likes to throw his opinion around on pitracer and exspect others to follow. This is not a slam on you georgie I just like to deal in facts. Also if you look all the way down on this page you will see an add for the brace, why would pit put that on his site if it was a bad product?

oh god...... lets not start the stupid 2 stroke vs 4 stroke thing in here please......... lets agree to disagree on that note.....

Um.. ?

We learned before there's nothing to argue cuz 2stroke owns 4 bangers.. and that was the end of the argument

I understand this is not a direct motocross application test, but still kinda interesting.

Leatt Testing

Also I have not seen this brace before (seems more geared toward the GP applications) but they have some interesting testing.
